Authentic Colombian mochila wayuu

Wayúu weaving is rich in traditional designs called kaanás (art of drawing weaving). This ancestral technique dates back to the pre-Columbian period and is used in the elaboration of pieces that, due to their great beauty and color, are the most appreciated among the Wayúu.

The traditional motifs of the kanaas are the most authentic expression of the way the Wayuu interpret and abstract elements from their material world, from their daily life, to create stylized figures of great symbolism, among them the genitalia of donkeys, the shells of turtles and the constellations of stars, among others.

These are generally geometric compositions that are repeated like a fret throughout the fabrics, each of which receives a name that expresses its meaning.

The Wayúu are an indigenous people that inhabit the Guajira peninsula, the most northeastern part of Colombia, bordering Venezuela; This community with a matriarchal structure has adapted to the inclement weather of a desert located in front of the Caribbean Sea.

Within the community, the man is dedicated to raising sheep and goats, planting corn, making musical instruments such as drums, and espadrilles made from old tires. Meanwhile, women dedicate themselves to weaving hammocks or hammocks to sleep in, backpacks or handbags for women, and colored blankets that highlight Wayúu beauty.

Backpacks are the maximum expression of Wayuú fabric. Are easy to recognize by their colors and designs. The backpacks are made in crochet (a technique introduced by Catholic missionaries at the beginning of the 20th century) or with crochet, and the elaboration of each piece can take approximately 20 days.
